Doctor Who Must Regain My Trust After I Saw Season 14’S Finale In The Theater & Left Disappointed

It’s been almost three months since I was walking into the movie theater with my friends, with anticipation desperately awaiting the Doctor Who season 14 finale. After watching “The Legend Of Ruby Sunday”, I had extremely high hopes for the season’s last episode, especially since season 14 marked the return of the revival’s original showrunner Russell T Davies. Unfortunately, the screening of the finale was extremely underwhelming and disappointing. Sutekh was defeated way too easily, the reveal of Ruby’s mother was underwhelming, and so was the explanation of Susan Twist’s story on the show.

Although all of these elements worked together to cause Doctor Who’s 14th season’s disappointing conclusion, the most disappointing aspect of the finale was the reveal of Ruby’s mother. Despite months of investment from loyal viewers and clues that Ruby is more than meets the eye, the finale revealed Ruby’s mom to be a normal human woman named Louise Miller. This revelation has completely broken the trust I had in the series as months of waiting for a satisfying conclusion didn’t pay off. Clearly, there’s a lot to be made up for in Doctor Who season 15.

Doctor Who Season 14’s Finale Was An Anticlimax After So Much Hype

Season 14 Set Up An Epic Finale That Didn’t Pay Off

The finale had so much to cover that it wouldn’t have been possible to give everything a satisfying ending. Despite the twist involving Ruby’s mother being one of the finale’s biggest disappointments, I was also let down by the explanation of Susan Twist’s character. Throughout the fourteenth season, She kept appearing through time and space, following The Doctor and Ruby on their adventures. I’ve been wondering for months who Susan Twist was playing and why she was following The Doctor. In the finale, it was revealed that she was merely a pawn of Sutekh, The God of Death.

The stakes of the finale could have been higher and the reveals should have been more thought out.

The reveal of Sutekh as “The One Who Waits” was a brilliant revelation. However, as someone The Doctor had been fearing for months, he was defeated very easily. Although he’s one of the most powerful villains that The Doctor has faced as he killed almost every human in existence, once he was dragged through the time vortex, all his work was undone, weakening the stakes of the episode. It just feels that all the stakes of the finale could have been higher and the reveals should have been more thought out to make the conclusions to these stories more satisfying.

Doctor Who’s Big Season 14 Reveal Left More Questions Than Answers

The Reveal of Ruby’s Mom Makes No Sense

Unfortunately, the reveal of Ruby’s mother being a regular woman opens Doctor Who to more questions than answers. The family revelation makes no sense in terms of the show as Ruby was able to defeat Maestro, the God of Music in “The Devil’s Chord” as she had a secret song buried with her. She was able to make it start randomly snowing in multiple episodes of season 14. Both of these acts suggest that Ruby Sunday cannot be a regular human being, and she must have some supernatural or extraterrestrial history in her family tree.

We still don’t know who Mrs. Flood is, and it seems like it will be a while until we get any answers.

A big mystery since Christmas Day 2023 has been the identity of Ruby Sunday’s next-door neighbor, Mrs. Flood. She has been mysterious since her first appearance, leading to multiple fourth wall breaks, where she talks to the audience, clearly knowing more than she is letting on. It’s clear that Mrs. Flood knows about The Doctor and his TARDIS, and according to the final scene of the fourteenth season, she knows that The Doctor’s story ends in terror. We still don’t know who Mrs. Flood is, and it seems like it will be a while until we get any answers.

Doctor Who Season 15 Has Some Making Up To Do

The 14th Season Broke The Trust Between The Audience And Russell T Davies

The disappointing conclusion to Doctor Who season 14 has broken the unspoken contract between the audience and the showrunner. Since Christmas Day 2023, audiences have been anxiously awaiting the identity of Ruby Sunday’s mother, and the revelation didn’t pay off. Personally, I feel that I’ve wasted time investing in this storyline for a poor conclusion. Because of this, an even bigger reveal and payoff in Doctor Who season 15 seems to be in order.

With any hope, the search for Ruby Sunday’s mother isn’t over, and this is just some sort of trick by the Patheon of Gods that The Doctor is currently facing. Either way, Doctor Who season 15 has to increase the stakes and have some sort of hook to keep audiences interested.
