The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks is now underway on Paramount+. Ahead of the debut of the final season’s third episode, CBR can unveil a sneak peek clip.
The episode, dubbed “The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel,” is set to debut on Oct. 31 following last week’s double premiere of the first two episodes on Disney+. The episode, written by Stephanie Amante-Ritter and directed by Brandon Williams, will see the Lower Deckers “hunt nanites on a resort… in space,” according to the synopsis. CBR’s sneak peek clip features Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) learning about an “undercover mission” he’ll be going on with Jack Ransom (Jerry O’Connell) and Andy Billups (Paul Scheer).
The series was created by Mike McMahan. Other members of the voice cast include Tawny Newsome (Beckett Mariner), Noel Wells (D’Vana Tendi), Eugene Cordero (Sam Rutherford), Dawnn Lewis (Carol Freeman), Fred Tatasciore (Shaxs), and Gillian Vigman (T’Ana). McMahan executive produces with Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, and Katie Krentz.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Ends Its Run With Season 5
Star Trek: Lower Decks initially debuted in 2020 on Paramount+, then called CBS All Access. While the ride will end with the conclusion of Season 5, some members of the Lower Decks team have not given up on seeing the stories of these characters continue in some way. McMahan has hinted that while Season 5 will be treated as the “final chapter” of Lower Decks, there’s still a good chance that a continuation or tie-in project could be made down the line.
“There’s been backdoor pilots in Star Trek since the first season of TOS,” McMahan said about the series possibly getting a spinoff in the future in a previous CBR interview. “For us, we’re embracing this as, it is a celebration, it is the final chapter of what we’ve done so far, and if we take a little break and then we come back, we could do more seasons. I’d be happy to do movies… I would do Lower Decks forever. I love it.”
In any case, there will be more Star Trek content to come from the Lower Decks team. Tawny Newsome is working on an unconnected Star Trek series that will be a live-action project, so it’s not expected to have the same tone as something like Lower Decks. However, Newsome has hinted that there may be appearances from Lower Decks actors.
“I mean, I always wanna work with my friends,” she told CinemaBlend. “I can definitely say that is part of my and Justin [Simien]’s idea for setting it in the 25th century was so that everybody that we’ve come to love in the franchise, like everyone in the Picard era, all of our friends from Lower Decks, like the possibility is definitely there.”
New episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks debut on Thursdays on Paramount+. Episode 3 will drop on Oct. 31, leaving seven episodes of the series left to go before the finale wraps things up on Dec. 19.
