The final chapter of Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser’s (Caitríona Balfe) epic love story is being written as Season 8 of the long-running Starz series Outlander is now in production. A behind-the-scenes short shared today confirmed that cameras are rolling on the final season, with the pair of stars walking through the history of the show together before they jump in front of the camera for the last time. Although there’s still a long wait until the series’s conclusion reaches screens everywhere, it gives a brief look behind the curtain at all the costumes and props utilized throughout the historical romantic drama’s decade-long run.
Outlander began airing back in 2014 and opened in WWII-era Scotland with the medic Claire who is transported back in time to 1743 where she meets her highland warrior soulmate, Jamie. Together, the couple’s love has endured through pivotal events in history, from the Jacobite rising to the American Revolution, only growing closer through each adventure they face. All the while, the series has gained a loyal following and become one of Starz’s flagship titles, also earning a prequel series in the upcoming Outlander: Blood of My Blood which will follow Claire and Jamie’s parents. With Season 8 of the parent series, the show will have adapted all nine of Diana Gabaldon’s released novels, ending with 2021’s Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone.
Following some uncertainty with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year and other minor delays, things appear to be full-speed for the Outlander team as they likely aim for a 2025 release date for the final season. It’s unclear at this time exactly who will be aboard for the final run, but Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, David Berry, Charles Vandervaart, and John Bell are all likely to reprise their roles based on the content of the books. Fresh faces and other returning names are sure to be announced as Season 8 approaches.
‘Outlander’ Returns With Season 7, Part 2 This Fall
News of the finale’s production comes amid a lengthy Droughtlander between the two halves of Season 7. Part 2 is set to premiere in November 2024, over a year since the Frasers last graced Starz. They’ll pick up right as the American Revolution kicks into high gear, leaving the family in peril once again. With the introduction of William Ransom (Vandervaart), Jamie’s secret son, the rest of the penultimate season will continue to dig into how the war pits fathers against sons and tears families apart. The ramifications of the war are likely to be felt by Claire, Jamie, and their allies into Season 8, but only time will tell how they’ll endure such a tumultuous period in history.
