Claire’S Secret Magical Powers In Outlander (& What They Mean For Season 8) Explained

Claire has some mysterious powers in Outlander that are sure to become even more critical going into season 8. This ability has been a far more prominent feature of author Diana Gabaldon’s books, but the TV show has primarily ignored it up to this point in the series. While it’s possible that this will continue into Outlander’s final season, the big reveal that Faith Fraser may have survived, as well as the mysterious return of Master Raymond, hints that Claire’s powers will be key to season 8’s story.

We naturally know that Claire is among those who can time travel in Outlander. This isn’t a skill that just anyone possesses, and there instead seems to be a genetic component involved with hearing the buzzing of standing stones or stepping through to different times. Claire inherited her time traveling capability from an ancient ancestor, most likely Master Raymond, and passed it along to her daughter Brianna. However, in addition to this, Claire has the magical ability to heal people. Though related to Outlander’s time travel gene, the books reveal it is far more complicated than that.

Claire Has The Magical Ability To Heal In Outlander

Claire Has A Blue Aura For Healing

When Claire had her miscarriage in Outlander season 2, Master Raymond revealed that she possessed the ability to heal. It is evident throughout the story that Claire has a passion and talent for practical healing, since she served as an army nurse before becoming a doctor in the 20th century. In the past, Claire frequently refused to walk away from someone—friend or enemy—who was injured or ill. Master Raymond’s words to Claire about her “blue aura” revealed that his went beyond a simple desire. Something about Claire’s DNA made her a healer, and she didn’t technically need tools to do it.

Master Raymond healed Claire when she had a severe infection in Outlander season 2, and he explained to her that he was able to do this because of his own blue aura. He noted that Claire shared this quality with him, though she still depended on practical medicine to heal her patients. Later, in Outlander season 4, the Native American shaman, Nayawenne, also mentioned Claire’s healing ability. By this point in the Outlander books, Claire had already experimented a little with her powers. However, the TV show has barely begun to explore what Claire can do.

Master Raymond Demonstrated How Powerful Claire Could Be In Season 2

Claire & Master Raymond Both Have Blue Auras

The most prominent example of Claire’s healing potential came in Outlander season 2 when Master Raymond healed Claire following her miscarriage. A piece of placenta had remained festering in Claire’s uterus, resulting in an infection spread throughout her body. Master Raymond placed his hands on Claire and asked her what she could see. With her eyes closed, Claire shared that she could see blue wings, which seemed to please Raymond. He stated that blue is the color of healing, and that these wings would carry away Claire’s pain if she let them.

As Master Raymond placed his hands on Claire’s body, she stated that she could feel the infection leaving her, along with the pain. However, the true difficulty came when Raymond used his magic to force the piece of placenta from Claire’s womb. He told her to call out to Jamie, and this action seemed to add to Master Raymon’s power. He was ultimately successful, but it’s implied in Outlander that it wasn’t the strange man’s power alone that achieved this. Claire’s contributed her own magical ability as well, and this strength had everything to do with her love for Jamie.

Claire’s Healing Power Is Related To Her Love & Connection To Others

The Outlander Books Hint At The Fuel For Claire’s Powers

Master Raymond combining Claire’s power to his own in Outlander season 2 is an excellent example of the root of this healing magic. The strength of this power comes from love and connection, and Claire was able to assist in her own healing by focusing on her love and desperation for Jamie. The Outlander books came with further examples of this. In Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, Claire healed a dying baby with her powers but required physical contact with Jamie to make this happen. Then, she healed Jamie himself, but needed the assistance of Young Ian and Roger to combine their love for Jamie with Claire’s.

It Was Foretold That Claire Would Come Into Her Power When All Her Hair Is White

Claire’s Future Is Clear

Claire is a long way off from mastering her powers in the Outlander TV show. Master Raymond told her that she had the same ability as him to heal back in season 2, but she has continued to depend on her practical knowledge and ability instead. Despite being a woman from the future, Claire is inclined to depend on science and logic, and is generally skeptical of the existence of the supernatural. However, there was another character in Outlander who recognized Claire’s magical ability, and she provided a significant hint regarding when Outlander’s protagonist would embrace her abilities.

The shaman Nayawenne told Claire back in Outlander season 4 that she would come into her power when her hair was white.

The shaman Nayawenne told Claire back in Outlander season 4 that she would come into her power when her hair was white. It was implied that this old woman possessed similar abilities to Claire, in addition to having some instinct for the future. Nayawenne also foresaw her own death, so we have every reason to believe she was right about Claire’s powers. However, since Claire’s hair is still mostly brown as of Outlander season 7, season 8 may not have enough time to really feature her full abilities.

How Claire’s Healing Ability Will Impact Her Outlander Season 8 Story

Outlander Hints That Claire’s Healing Power Will Be A Significant Focus In The Coming Episodes

It’s implied in the Outlander books that Claire’s healing ability will be significant within her ending. However, the TV show is being wrapped up before Gabaldon will have a chance to publish the final book in her series. Outlander season 8 will be largely based on the ninth out of the total 10-planned books, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, but the showrunners have had no choice but to make changes to wrap the story up early. Regardless, we can assume that Claire will do some magical healing in the coming episodes.

Claire healing Jamie and the dying baby both happen in Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, so these events are likely to play out during Outlander season 8 as well. However, the big Faith twist of season 7 implies there will be far more to it. This is a story that hasn’t existed in the books, and it seems to be setting up a reveal that Master Raymond brought Claire’s baby back from the dead. However, just as Master Raymond couldn’t heal Claire alone, Faith’s survival will surely involve Claire’s powers as well. Only time will tell, but, one way or another, Claire’s mysterious power in Outlander must come into play.
