Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Just Made An Upcoming Original CBS Character Tragedy Worse

Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 has a brewing tragedy, and its two-episode premiere set it up to be more heartbreaking. In its almost two-decade run, the Criminal Minds franchise has seen its share of losses, either personally or professionally, for the profilers. Given the nature of the job of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), there are major risks to their and their loved ones’ safety. The team has suffered from these mishaps, whether that’s Spencer Reid going to prison for a crime he didn’t commit or Aaron Hotchner having to listen to his wife get murdered on the phone.

It has been a while since any of the profilers were in grave danger. Despite David Rossi’s detention in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 1, it never felt like the show would actually kill him off. As the BAU tackles a more dangerous case in season 2 with a prolific and potentially government-trained serial killer in Gold Star, not to mention the threat posed by Elias Voit, it isn’t outside the realm of possibility that there will be casualties ahead. Beyond the procedural aspect of the show, however, Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 already has a confirmed character exit.

JJ’s Voit Conversation Makes Wil’s Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Exit Worse

Voit’s Predicament Highlights The Importance Of Family

Long before the new season premiered, it has already been confirmed that Josh Stewart is exiting Criminal Minds as Will LaMontaigne after being a part of the franchise for years. No official reason has been revealed about why he is suddenly leaving the universe. Similarly, details are scant as to how he will leave in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, but JJ Jarreau’s conversation with Voit highlights just how devastating it would be for her to lose her husband. Family is one of the few things that Sicarius still cares about and JJ has that with Will and their sons.

Maintaining a life outside of the BAU has been incredibly difficult, if not impossible. Proof of that is Derek Morgan having to leave Criminal Minds to prioritize his family. JJ is the only one who has made it work, albeit not without all sorts of sacrifices. As she confesses to Tara Lewis in the Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 premiere, it has been a constant struggle, but never did they consider breaking up. Despite the many brushes with death, both JJ and Will have survived for their family. Thinking that it’s coming to an end soon is disheartening.

How Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Will Write Out Wil LaMontaigne

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 1 May Have Set Up Will’s Exit

Per the Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 premiere, Will is alive and well. Considering everything that he and JJ have been through, it’s highly unlikely that his exit will be due to them separating. Instead, it could be external factors that would pull them apart. Previously, Will had a health scare, and while he survived that in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 1, showrunner Erica Messer warned that he isn’t out of the woods yet. Perhaps that illness comes back leading to his death. Otherwise, Will could die while on duty, which isn’t outside the realm of possibility given his job.
