The new House of the Dragon season 2 trailer just spoiled how the HBO series will end. The Game of Thrones prequel series is based on the book Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin, which examines the fictional histories of Westeros and the rule of the Targaryen dynasty. The show’s first season saw the dramatic events leading up to the Dance of the Dragons, a historic civil war between opposing Targaryen monarchs, Rhaenyra and Aegon II. With first blood drawn in the House of the Dragon season 1 ending, season 2 will dive fully into the war.
HBO has released another trailer for House of the Dragon season 2, primarily showing action clips from the upcoming season. With the Dance of Dragons erupting across Westeros, noble houses such as the Starks, Lannisters, and Baratheones have been called to arms to support their respective sides. The trailer demonstrated glimpses of the House of the Dragon cast, hinting at many of the character conflicts going into season 2, concluding with Rhaenyra stating “War is coming, and neither of us may win.”
Rhaenyra Is Right, Nobody Wins In House Of The Dragon’s Ending
Rhaenyra & Aegon II Both Die Before The Conflict Ends
While Game of Thrones constantly saw TV fans and book readers theorizing about who would win at the end, House of the Dragon already has that answer: no one. Rhaenyra and Aegon II represent the two major factions in the show, but neither is ultimately the winner of the Dance of the Dragons. Like much of George R.R. Martin’s material, the Dance of the Dragons demonstrates the dangers of those in power and how war leads to devastation that no one profits from.
Aegon II’s reign on the Iron Throne is rather short, and Rhaenyra’s tenure as monarch is delegitimized by the histories. Both of them die before the war ends, along with a significant majority of their children and allies. Ultimately, the Targaryen dynasty continues through one of Rhaenyra’s sons, but the war is entirely detrimental to everyone involved. The new trailer foreshadows this ending perfectly, honing in on the destruction and horror of a civil war.
The Dance Of The Dragons Hurt House Targaryen For Centuries To Come
The Targaryen Dynasty Loses A Signifcant Amount Of Its Dragon Power, Leading To Its Downfall
A Targaryen may end up on the Iron Throne in House of the Dragon, but the cost is heavy for the family. The start of the series sees the dynasty at the peak of its power, shortly after the prosperous reign of Jaehaerys I, with several dragons at their disposal and more actively being bred. Not only will the cost be overbearing on the Targaryen family, but many of the dragons alive in House of the Dragon will perish before the conflict ends. House of the Dragon will see the beginning of the end for House Targaryen.
