House Of The Dragon Sets Up Major Upcoming Spinoff With One Stark Line

The House of the Dragon season 2 premiere has cleverly hinted at another major upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff. The hit prequel series is set roughly 170 years before the events of Game of Thrones, displaying the period of time when the historic House Targaryen reigned supreme with dragon power. The show is based on the book Fire & Blood, a companion piece to George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire saga that examines the Targaryen reign, providing enough source material for far more than just one show.

While Game of Thrones is the centerpiece of George R.R. Martin’s vast world, he’s established a fictional universe with infinite possibilities for storytelling. Thus, HBO has already begun production on multiple upcoming Game of Thrones spinoffs. Filming has recently begun for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is expected to air in late 2025. That show will take place roughly halfway in between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones and is based on Martin’s novellas. The next series to follow after that was just teased in House of the Dragon.

Cregan’s Line About Torrhen Stark & Aegon The Conqueror Sets Up Aegon’s Conquest Spinoff

Torrhen Stark Was The Last King In The North Who Knelt To Aegon The Conqueror

House of the Dragon season 2 introduced audiences to Cregan Stark, the great-great-great-great grandfather of Lord Ned Stark in Game of Thrones. He and Jacaerys Velaryon discuss their potential alliance, and the pair bring up the history between their houses. Jacaerys mentions the name Torrhen Stark, referring to a key figure from Aegon’s Conquest, who was the last King in the North before Aegon united Westeros under the Targaryen banner. Before this event, the Starks had ruled the North as kings for thousands of years.

He was forever known as the “King Who Knelt,”

Aegon the Conqueror flew from Dragonstone to bring the seven kingdoms of Westeros to their knees, with many taking up arms against him. While families like the Lannisters fought bloody battles and were devastated by Aegon, Torrhen Stark formally surrendered himself, not wanting to lose thousands of Northern men for his pride. He was forever known as the “King Who Knelt,” revered for his wisdom and self-sacrifice as a noble leader. This should be a significant plot point in the upcoming spinoff show.

What We Know About The Aegon’s Conquest Spinoff

Aegon’s Conquest Is In Early Development

There’s not a ton of information just yet about the Aegon’s Conquest show’s development, as it’s still in its early stages. In February, screenwriter Mattson Tomlin was announced to be attached to the project, and the show has been greenlit by HBO, meaning it’s progressed further along than many of the attempted spinoffs. Given that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is just starting, Aegon’s Conquest will likely be up next, meaning with House of the Dragon, there will be three ongoing series set in Martin’s universe.
