The characters of Outlander have certainly faced a tough road, but after a challenging season 5 story, I’m so glad one person in particular is headed toward the perfect ending. Outlander season 8 will mark the ending of the romantacy series, and season 7 got started on the tough work of wrapping up various stories. There are still several episodes to go, but for side characters especially, the general resolution to their adventures is in sight. In the case of Young Ian Murray, it’s looking as if Outlander season 8 will give him a fittingly heartwarming ending.
Young Ian is Jamie and Claire’s nephew, and he quickly became a fan favorite in Outlander after he was introduced in season 3. He has always been kind and accepting, but it’s clear that Ian has also inherited the Fraser warrior spirit. Unfortunately, Ian hasn’t always had an easy time. His greatest challenge came in Outlander season 5, when he left the Mohawk after his wife, Emily, essentially divorced him. In the eyes of her culture, Ian had failed to give her a viable child, and so it was within Emily’s right to find a new husband. This loss nearly drove Ian to suicide, but he has come a long way since.
Young Ian Is All Set Up To Get The Perfect Ending
Ian & Rachel Have A Baby On The Way
It took Roger stepping in to stop Ian from killing himself in Outlander season 5. Years later, Outlander season 7 has seen Ian toward a much happier ending. He finally tied the knot with Rachel Hunter, and the newlyweds are a heartwarming joy to see together on screen. It’s a lovely romance, and was perfectly paid off in the finale of Outlander season 7 with the reveal that Rachel is pregnant.
Ian with a happy family of his own would be the perfect resolution to his overarching story, since the loss of his wife and child drove him to the edge in season 5.
Ian will finally have a chance to raise his own child with a partner he loves, and I’m heartily excited to see this play out in Outlander season 8. Ian with a happy family of his own would be the perfect resolution to his overarching story, since the loss of his wife and child drove him to the edge in season 5. However, I can’t help but feel that Ian and Rachel’s happy ending wouldn’t be complete if Outlander season 8 didn’t acknowledge one final problem.
Outlander Season 8 Can’t Ignore Ian’s Mohawk Son
Ian’s Happy Ending Wouldn’t Work Otherwise
When Ian lived among the Mohawk, his wife Emily suffered multiple miscarriages. This was ultimately why she chose to remarry, and Ian returned to Fraser’s Ridge where he planned to end his life. What he didn’t know for several years was that Emily was pregnant when he left. She and her people had assumed that her baby was her new husband’s, but the newborn’s white skin and red hair revealed the truth. While serving as a scout for the Continental Army, Ian was briefly reunited with Emily, which is when he first saw his son, Swiftest of Lizards.
Emily asked Ian to give Swiftest of Lizards an English name, and he chose to pass on his own, naming the boy Ian James. However, he could not remain with the Mohawk and raise his son. While it’s heartwarming that Ian finally has a chance to start a family like he always wanted, it wouldn’t feel right if little Ian James was left out of the rest of the story. I’m eager to see this charming Outlander character get the ending it deserves, but it would only be bittersweet if season 8 didn’t provide an opportunity for Ian to get to know his first son.
