Outlander’s Season 7 is still airing, but the show’s eighth and final season recently completed filming. The show’s two stars recently talked about what it was like shooting the series finale and saying goodbye to the beloved television show.

Outlander’s seventh season is currently airing on Starz after its premiering back in June 2023, with the second half of the season airing beginning on Nov. 22, 2024. A release date for the final season of Outlander has not yet been announced, but the cast recently announced it had wrapped the series finale. Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan, who play Claire and Jamie in the series, spoke with Collider about the range of emotions they felt while filming the show’s final moments. Balfe talked about how emotional she became in the time leading up to filming the show’s final moments. “The leading up to it was the hardest part,” she said. “A lot of people were feeling very out of sorts. The anxiety of the impending ending was quite intense for me anyway. And then, there was a lot of ugly crying on my behalf.”

Heughan added how it wasn’t just the last few days of filming that were full of emotions. “The last day was emotional, but so were the weeks, even months, beforehand,” he said. “Sometimes there were things happening or emotions where I’d be like, ‘Where is this coming from? What is this?’ And you’d realize, ‘Oh, my God, it’s because we’re doing the last season.'”

The show’s final read-through proved to be a particularly emotional experience for Heughan. “There were days like when we did the last final read-through where I was crying, but then the next day, I’d be good with it,” he said. “You make your peace. And then, we kept getting reminded, throughout the show. There would be these moments where you were like, ‘Oh, this might be the last time that I work with this person, or the last time we see this location.’ There were multiple goodbyes. It was so draining. It was so tiring because you were constantly feeling like you were on this roller coaster of emotions.”

Heughan expressed his empathy for fans of the series but also promised there is much to look forward to ahead of Outlander’s ending in Season 8. “I can’t even imagine what it feels like for the fans. But there is still so much to look forward to. We haven’t finished just yet.”

Outlander’s Seventh Season Set to End This Month

Outlander made its debut back in 2014 when it began airing on Starz. The historical drama series focuses on the story of Claire Randall (Balfe), a married World War II nurse who finds herself transported to Scotland in the year 1743. There, she meets and soon falls in love with the Highland warrior Jamie Frasher (Heughan). Their relationship sees both characters caught up in the Jacobite risings, a tumultuous part of British history that aimed to restore the Catholic House of Stuart to the throne.

Outlander is based on Diana Gabaldon’s historical fiction novel series of the same name. The seventh season of the show is based on An Echo in the Bone, which is also the seventh book in the series. Two more books, Written in My Own Heart’s Blood and Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone round out the Outlander series, and it is expected that the eighth season of the show will finish adapting the rest of the story. The final episode of Season 7 is scheduled to air Jan. 17, 2025.

Outlander’s seventh season is currently airing on Starz.
