With a bloodline that spans across centuries, it’s hard to keep track of who’s who!
When it comes to a show like Outlander, between the time jumps and ever-growing families, it’s hard to keep track of how each character intertwines, and furthermore, what each character’s origin story is. While breaking down each family tree within the entirety of the Outlander cinematic universe is tempting, in the interest of limiting confusion, take a look at our breakdown of the Fraser family. Though Jamie Fraser might be the most notable name within this line, with the upcoming Outlander prequel series, Blood of My Blood, set to hit screens on August 8, fans will get to know the Frasers that came before him—specifically, his mother and father. Here, meet the Frasers.
The story begins with Simon Fraser and Davina Porter
Before there was Jamie Frasier or even Jamie Fraser’s mother and father, there was his grandfather Simon and grandmother Davina. While Jamie is the book boyfriend (and on-screen boyfriend) we’ve come to adore over the years, his grandfather Simon didn’t exactly share the same honor, as during the Jacobite rebellion, he essentially played both sides.
Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie Fraser continue the Fraser line
Though we haven’t dove too deeply into the relationship of Jamie’s parents on screen in Outlander, we can’t wait to learn all about them in Blood of My Blood. Playing these two characters are Jamie Roy and Harriet Slater.
Murtagh Fraser, Brian’s cousin, had feelings for Ellen as well
Though a second cousin of Jamie’s father, Murtagh plays an important role within this family tree. Though he vied for the affections of Ellen MacKenzie before she chose Brian, he set his heartbreak aside and remained a loyal godfather to Jamie.
Brian and Ellen had three children: Jenny, William and of course, Jamie
William, the eldest Fraser child, passed at a young age, while Jenny continued running the Fraser household after her mother’s death. She went on to marry Ian Murray, and among the seven children they had together, their son Young Ian had the most prolific storyline in Outlander. Finally, there’s the beloved Jamie, who leads Outlander with his good looks, bravery and honor.
Jamie married Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser
The romance at the forefront of Outlander is that of Claire and Jamie, and it’s one we simply can’t get enough of. This duo first crossed paths when Claire, a WWII nurse, accidentally time-traveled to 1743, where she met dashing Scotsman Jamie Fraser—and the rest is history.
The beloved duo had a daughter, Brianna, who married Roger
Though Brianna was conceived by Claire and Jamie, Claire travels back to 1940 where she’s raised by Claire’s post-WWII era husband, Frank Randall. In the 20th century, she meets a history professor, Roger, whom she marries.
Brianna and Roger have two children of their own
Brianna and Roger welcome Jeremiah and Amanda, making Claire and Jamie grandparents.
And Jamie has a few more children of his own…but it’s complicated
Jamie briefly marries Laoghaire, the young woman after his heart since her youth, and though it eventually falls apart, he had two step-daughters with her, Marsali and Joan. Additionally, Jamie was manipulated into sleeping with Geneva Dunsany, resulting in the birth of a son, who was his, William.
Jamie and Claire also took in another son along the way
Still with us? Jamie and Claire take in young Fergus, whom they meet along the way in Paris and form a close bond with.
