NCIS fans are furious with bosses and claim they are trying to “extend the almost dead franchise.”

In a Reddit thread posted on Wednesday, a viewer asked other social media users about their points of view regarding the upcoming NCIS spinoff series about Tony and Ziva. The synopsis of the show, which is coming out this year, reads, “After Ziva’s apparent death, Tony raises their daughter, Tali.”

It adds, “Years later, Ziva returns and reunites with Tony. Tony’s company is attacked, and the family travels to Europe, trying to learn who’s after them and to trust each other again.” By journeying back more than a decade, NCIS: Tony and Ziva aims to unravel the mystery surrounding Tony and Ziva’s lives post-departure from the original series.

Ziva made a dramatic comeback years later to assist Gibbs (portrayed by Austin Stowell) with a case, only to leave the capital once more for a Parisian life with Tony and Tali. Details about the latest premiere are still under wraps, but what’s certain is that the spin-off will grace Paramount+ with a 10-episode run, shifting away from its traditional CBS home.

However, some fans don’t seem that impressed, as one wrote on Reddit, “I feel they are just trying to extend the almost dead franchise. The viewership for NCIS and NCIS: Hawaii seems to be relatively low. Do you think they want to bring back some old audiences for the new show?” Another agreed, adding, “Not interested. Never like either character.”

One more said, “I like original NCIS and Origins and don’t watch the others; but I have been waiting all these years for Ziva and Tony to get their story that was brutally amputated by some truly idiot producers. I don’t think anyone has been penalized for that except, stupidly, Cote de Pablo. It’s a shame what they did. I don’t know if they can ever recapture the promise of that story, but I am eager to try.”

But not everyone shared the same point of view, as a fan of the series pointed out that many people are excited for the new show as they want to learn more about Tony and Ziva, who were “extremely popular characters.” A fan wrote, “NCIS was still CBS’s second most viewed scripted series last year, falling just behind The Tracker. It had been number 1.”

They added, “The numbers of live viewers may be low, but it recoups through delayed viewership. NCIS Hawaii was canceled last year, but its viewership had been on an upward trend as well. NCIS Origins is doing well enough that it got a full series order – which I think is appropriate. It’s a good show.

“And yes, there are lots of people excited for the new show because they want to see Tony and Ziva’s story. They were extremely popular characters. Maybe it is CBS trying to extend the franchise, but that’s probably because it’s one of the few shows still making them money hand over fist. I just don’t know that the franchise is almost dead.”

One more fan of the show continued, “I don’t think the franchise is dead or dying. My husband was take it or leave it with the main NCIS, but loved NOLA & Hawaii. And he’s devouring Origins!!!”
