NCIS: Sydney has a lot planned for season 2, but its storylines may contain an unexpected romance. The NCIS spinoff follows American NCIS agents as they work alongside members of the Australian Federal Police in a surprising but welcome collaboration. Romance is not a new topic in the NCIS franchise, and NCIS: Sydney even began setting up a potential romance between Evie and DeShawn in season 1. However, season 2 seems to be going in a completely new direction.
NCIS: Sydney season 2 is set to continue from where it left off in the season 1 finale, which ended on a cliffhanger and left things uncertain for the NCIS/AFP team. The NCIS: Sydney season 2 trailer revealed the team is still working together on intense and dangerous missions. The team is closer than ever, which is usually a positive sign of where the upcoming year will go. This time, however, it may not be a good thing.
NCIS: Sydney Season 2 Is Hinting At A Mackey And JD Romance
Mackey And JD Would Be The First Official NCIS: Sydney Couple
A brief clip in the NCIS: Sydney season 2 trailer shows Mackey and JD sharing a particularly close moment after Mackey knocks JD down and lands on top of him. Both characters stare at each other stunned before the trailer moves on quickly. The shocking moment hints that more could be in store for the professional relationship between Mackey and JD. As partners, Mackey and JD have learned to trust and befriend one another throughout season 1, but season 2 could see them develop feelings for each other if the scene in the trailer is more than just a hint.
If Mackey and JD do form a romantic relationship, they will be the first official couple in NCIS: Sydney. While Evie and DeShawn have a slow-burn romance, they have yet to make anything official, which means every NCIS/AFP member is still single for the time being. As Mackey and JD have just become friends after taking time to warm up to each other’s personal and cultural differences, switching their relationship to romantic would be fairly fast-paced.
Why A Mackey And JD Romance In NCIS: Sydney Is A Bad Idea
Mackey And JD Are Better Off As Colleagues
Both are fantastic characters, but Mackey and JD do not make sense as a romantic pairing. They are very different, and they still do not know each other very well. NCIS: Sydney season 1 hinted at Mackey’s secret past, but she still has yet to reveal it. If there is a romance at all, Mackey would need to open up to her team fully and learn to be vulnerable, but that is just not who her character is.
…having two ongoing romances would be too much for the small team.
A Mackey and JD relationship would also be a bad idea because it would overshadow Evie and DeShawn’s romance. If the team starts pairing up romantically, it might turn NCIS: Sydney into more of a romantic show, which should not be the case. The NCIS franchise has balanced romance, action, and personal arcs beautifully so far, and having two ongoing romances would be too much for the small team.
