Outlander star Sam Heughan has teased the relationship between Jamie and Lord John Grey in season 8, revealing what’s next for them in the final episodes. Outlander season 8 will begin off the back of a shocking season finale, which implied Jamie’s (Heughan) firstborn daughter, who he believed was stillborn in season 2, might actually be Fanny’s (Florrie May Wilkinson) mother. However, in the midst of these time travel reveals, there was a dramatic confrontation between him and Lord John (David Berry), falling out after the latter married Claire (Caitríona Balfe) when Jamie was believed dead.
Speaking with What to Watch, Heughan teased Jamie and Lord John’s contentious relationship in Outlander season 8, following their season 7 confrontation. The actor explained how their complicated history together had imbued a friendship between them, even if Lord John’s feelings are more romantic. However, he also said both are father figures for William (Charles Vandervaart), meaning that, while it might take some time, they may need to reconcile their differences in the future. Check out what Heughan had to say below:
I think it’s setting them up very much apart. In season 8, there’s a lot of work that they will have to do to become friends again. And who knows if they will. They have so much history, it’s probably one of the most interesting relationships, I think, outside of Jamie and Claire, and I love working with David Berry. He’s just the most incredible actor, so thoughtful, and he brings such nuance to that character. I love that relationship because they started out as enemies, as a prisoner and his jailer. Then there’s this love that John Grey has for Jamie and Jamie loves John as a friend, and I think that has also complicated things in some way. But at this point, they’re also both fathers to William and he certainly has both of their qualities. So there’s a lot for them to work through and I think yeah, it could take a long time for them to be playing chess again.
What Heughan’s Statement Means For Jamie & Lord John In Outlander Season 8
Can They Come To Terms With Past Mistakes?
The biggest source of conflict between the two former friends right now is Lord John’s marriage to Claire, which he did in order to place her under protection after her husband’s supposed death. However, this relationship went further than just marriage on paper, with Outlander season 7, episode 11 ending with the newlyweds sleeping together, pretending they were each with Jamie. However, his return sparked a conflict between the duo, which boiled over in the season finale, setting the stage for their future interactions in season 8.
Given the length of time Jamie and Lord John have known each other, it’s unclear if this latest mark on their history will be permanent or temporary. The cast of Outlander also have pressing matters to deal with beyond their personal relationships, especially if Faith is still alive. However, since there’s only 10 episodes left before the series ends for good, a resolution between the two friends seems like a necessity. Whether it’s a positive or negative outcome, however, will remain unclear until the show comes back.
