Final ballots for the 30th Critics Choice Awards go out to members on January 3, with the Irish star hoping to beat the likes of Keira Knightley and Keri Russell to win the best actress in a drama series gong

With the final season of Outlander now in the can, the show’s charismatic stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan are looking ahead to the next stage of their careers.

And Caitriona has the chance to cap her decade-long portrayal of time-travelling nurse Claire Fraser by winning one of the most prestigious awards in American television.

She has been nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series at the 30th Critics Choice Awards, although she is up against some of the biggest names in Hollywood including Keira Knightley, Keri Russell and Kathy Bates.

The final ballots go out to members of the Broadcast Television Journalists Association on Friday, January 3, to be returned by the deadline of midnight on Friday, January 10. The awards ceremony will be held in Santa Monica on Sunday, January 12 and broadcast live on E!

It’s the third time Caitriona, 45, has been nominated for the Critics Choice best TV actress gong after previous nods in 2016 and 2018. If successful, it would arguably be the finest achievement of her time on Outlander.

After the nominees were announced last month, the Dublin dazzler posted on Instagram: “Pretty damn thrilled by this … Thank you so much @criticschoice for this huge honour. So grateful to be amongst these amazing women nominated and endlessly grateful for Claire, the role of a lifetime and this show and all the people who make it amazing … cast, writers, crew and of course fans. Go raibh míle maith agaibh.”

That phrase is an Irish Gaelic expression for ‘thank you’, which literally translates as ‘may you have goodness’.

The award nomination recognises Caitriona’s work on the seventh season of Outlander, which provided some of the most emotionally challenging scenes so far.

One fan said: “Such a deserved nomination!! Your work in episode 7×11 was phenomenal. It is probably in my top 3 eps of the series! I could literally feel her grief in those cries for Jamie. Beautiful work!”
