The seventh season of Outlander has concluded, leaving fans eager to revisit the series from the beginning.
During their latest re-watch of the popular Starz series, viewers may have picked up on a subtle detail hinting at a future storyline, reports the Daily Record.
After Claire Fraser (portrayed by Caitríona Balfe) returned to the 20th century, she spent some time at Reverend Wakefield’s (James Fleet) residence.
While recuperating and explaining her two-year absence to her first husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), she observed the reverend’s adopted son Roger Wakefield (Rory Burns) playing in the house.
A significant detail included by the creators was young Roger running around the house with an aeroplane toy.
Although it could have been just a plaything for the child, it also seemed to hint at the fate of his father Jeremiah ‘Jerry’ Walter MacKenzie (Nicholas Ralph).
Roger was adopted by the kind-hearted Inverness clergyman after his parents were killed during World War II.
He might have known that his father was a fighter pilot, so playing with an aeroplane would have provided him with a connection to his late parent.
For those unfamiliar with the Outlander books, the toy aeroplane appeared to be a clear reference to this storyline, which would be developed later.
Both Outlander season seven and Diana Gabaldon’s short story A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows shed light on Jerry’s tragic end.
Jerry served as a Spitfire pilot with the Green Squadron between 1939 and 1941, until an injury necessitated a period of rest at home.
He was subsequently enlisted by Frank for a top-secret mission to Poland to photograph Nazi concentration camps.
Before embarking on this mission, Jerry was sent to Northumberland for manoeuvre training. However, his aircraft crashed on Halloween during this training period.
The crash site was near a group of standing stones, and upon leaning against one of these monoliths in the aftermath of his accident, Jerry found himself transported back in time.
In the 18th century, Jerry encountered several problems with the locals, including the theft of his dog tags – his only means of identification.
Fortunately, he was eventually guided back to the stones and his own time by his son Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) and Buck MacKenzie (Diarmaid Murtagh), who had also ended up in 1739.
Upon returning to the 20th century, Jerry managed to reach his wife just as an air raid struck London. He saved his infant son but was killed in the process.
As his dog tags were lost in the past, Jerry’s body could not be identified, leading to the belief that he had gone missing.
This implies that Frank may have indirectly contributed to Jerry’s death.
