Outlander star Sam Heughan has shared his thoughts on filming the eighth and final season of the Starz series. Attending a screening for his Starz thriller The Couple Next Door, Heughan, 44, was questioned by host Josh Horowitz about his experience on Outlander.
Josh Horowitz, host of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, inquired about Heughan’s emotions during the final shoot, particularly when returning for some additional scenes, reports the Scottish Daily Express.
Heughan recalled the unusual experience of going back to film more scenes, stating: “We’d finished but we were going back for like, I think, two weeks.”
He noted that it felt strange returning to set after some of his co-stars had already wrapped up their scenes. “In some ways, it was kinda weird because, I think Richard [Rankin] and Sophie [Skelton] had been wrapped out three times.”
Heughan shared his own emotional response to the final shoot, saying: “I mean, look the whole of last year actually was very emotional. It was a very difficult one.”
Reflecting on the reasons behind his emotions, he added: “I know why because we knew it was coming. Some days it just felt like another day on set. It was like, ‘Oh, this is what we’ve done for the last 11 years.'”.
Heughan highlighted the poignant moments that made the experience bittersweet, stating: “And then other days you’re like, ‘This is the last time I will ever put on this garter or boot, or whatever it was.’ So it was like, ‘This is the last time I’ll be with this person.'” He concluded by sharing the emotional impact of the final day on set, saying, “And there were a lot of goodbyes and the last day was very emotional.”
Outlander propelled Heughan to fame after he had previously appeared in smaller roles in the BBC medical drama Doctors, Hallmark’s heartwarming film A Christmas Princess and Heart of Lightness. However, it was his portrayal of Jamie Fraser in Outlander that made him a global sensation.
Since his breakthrough role in Outlander, Heughan has featured in a variety of other projects including films such as Bloodshot, The Spy Who Dumped Me, SAS: Red Notice, and It’s All Coming Back To Me. His television credits include Suspect, The Couple Next Door, and To Olivia, as well as his travelogue with Outlander co-star Graham McTavish, Men In Kilts.
According to IMDb, his next project is Everest, which is currently in production.
Not one to sit back and relax, Heughan is also a businessman, owning the Sassenach Spirits whisky brand and the fitness company My Peak Challenge.
