The Outlander books have already detailed what’s next for Brianna, but I can’t help but hope the TV show takes a different direction. The upcoming season 8 will mean the end of the romantacy series, but this is complicated given the fact that author Diana Gabaldon hasn’t yet finished the books. There is one more novel on the way, and it won’t arrive until after Outlander season 8 has put a definitive end to the series. Still, there is still some source material left for Starz to use in the coming episodes, but in Brianna’s case, this may not be the way to go.
There are currently nine published Outlander books in Gabaldon’s central series, and the TV show has covered (more or less) eight of them. Book nine, titled Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, will serve as the foundation for Outlander season 8, but the problem lies in the fact that this book won’t work as a definitive ending for the series. Significant alterations have to be made, and Outlander season 7 has already gotten this started with the non-canon reveal that Faith Fraser somehow lived. Though I’m generally not thrilled about changes from the books, I can’t help but hope that Brianna’s season 8 story won’t include a pregnancy.
Brianna & Roger Have A Third Child In The Outlander Books
Little Davy Is Due To Be Born In Season 8
At the end of Outlander season 7, Brianna and Roger prepare to return to 18th-century Fraser’s Ridge to reunite with Jamie and Claire. This is precisely what the co uple does in the books, too, ultimately reestablishing their family in North Carolina. Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone takes this further by revealing that Brianna is pregnant. She ultimately gives birth to a little boy, David William Ian Fraser MacKenzie.
Davy’s birth is undoubtedly an exciting development for the MacKenzies and Frasers, and little Davy contributes significantly to the story in the ninth Outlander book. Jemmy and Mandy quickly identify that Davy doesn’t have the genetic ability to travel time. This means that, no matter what happens, Brianna and Roger can’t travel back to the future to escape danger as they have before. Davy is strictly an 18th-century child, so the MacKenzies must face the American Revolution head-on. As important as this is to Outlander’s continued story, I have to hope that Davy’s birth won’t happen in season 8.
A Pregnancy In Season 8 Wouldn’t Leave Room For The Outlander Story Brianna Deserves
Brianna’s Book Ending Certainly Won’t Revolve Around Pregnancy (So The Show Shouldn’t Either)
Brianna went through pregnancy and birth in Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, but there is still one more Outlander book on the way to wrap up her story. However, this won’t be true for season 8. If the coming episodes reveal that Brianna is pregnant, it would mean that her final arc of the TV series will revolve around bringing Davy into the world. As beautiful as this story is for the MacKenzies in the Outlander books, I would much prefer the show’s final installment feature a story for Brianna that would better satisfy her full arc.
Brianna would do anything for her children, but her story doesn’t entirely revolve around motherhood.
Brianna would do anything for her children, but her story doesn’t entirely revolve around motherhood. This is part of what I enjoy about this Outlander character. She is implied to be a sort of child of destiny in both the books and TV show. In Starz’s version of events, she was identified as the 200-year-old baby who would ultimately unveil the next Scottish king. Additionally, it’s been hinted that Brianna’s abilities as an engineer and architect will have a significant impact on the past. Outlander season 8 will have to bring Brianna’s story full circle somehow, and taking up time on Davy’s story won’t achieve that.
Brianna Can Have A New Adventure In Outlander Season 8 (While Her Story Continues In The Books)
Outlander Can Imply That Book Events Will Play Out After Season 8
Of course, I’m not looking for Davy’s story to be eliminated from Outlander entirely. Instead, I would rather see season 8 dedicated to a different aspect of Brianna’s journey. Outlander showrunners have expressed a desire to leave room for Gabaldon’s final book, implying that the events of season 8 will segue somewhat seamlessly into the author’s upcoming installment. So, Brianna could head off on a separate adventure in the coming episodes, and once that is wrapped up, Outlander’s finale could come with the happy reveal that Brianna is expecting another baby.
Precisely what that adventure will be in Outlander season 8 is difficult to say. The ending of season 7 suggests that the mystery of Faith Fraser will take up the bulk of the show’s ending, so Brianna may get looped into that as well. If she doesn’t have a newborn, then Brianna could feasibly use the stones to travel back in time to the year Faith was born in France, potentially reporting to her mother with news about what really happened to the baby. This could, perhaps, even link to the 200-year-old baby prophecy somehow. The possibilities are endless—but only if Outlander holds off on Brianna’s canon story.
