The Fraser Family Tree In Outlander Explained

The Fraser family continues to get bigger in Outlander. Since the series began, more characters have married or been born into this Scottish clan, while others have been explored through flashbacks and further time travel. This has allowed for a rather broad look at Jamie Fraser’s family, extending the lore of this fantasy time-travel TV series. It’s because of this that, with Outlander’s ending drawing near, a spinoff like Outlander: Blood of My Blood has become possible.

Outlander season 7, part 2, sees Roger MacKenzie travel further back in time than Claire or Brianna ever have, and he has begun to run into some of the older members of Jamie Fraser’s family. Of course, he has also come face to face with a handful of his own ancestors, and these MacKenzie interactions are key in Roger’s own Outlander story in the show’s final seasons. Still, the appearance of people like Brian Fraser holds some weight as well, especially since this and another character within Jamie’s final tree will be the primary focus of Blood of My Blood and are, therefore, worth knowing.

Simon Fraser

Grandfather Of Jamie Fraser

The oldest Fraser to appear in Outlander is Jamie’s grandfather, Simon Fraser, the 11th Lord of Lovet, AKA “The Old Fox.” Simon was a pretty nasty figure, very different from Jamie’s father or Jamie himself. Simon appeared in Outlander season 2 when it was revealed that he was financially benefitting from both sides of the Jacobite rebellion.

The Old Fox was married twice and had several mistresses, resulting in seven children (at least). One of his bastard sons was, of course, Brian, whom he never saw eye-to-eye with—a fact that extended to Brian’s son Jamie.

Brian Fraser

Father Of Jamie Fraser & Jenny Murray

Brian Fraser, son of Simon and father of Jenny and Jamie, was the Laird Broch Tuarach of Lallybroch. He was a devoted father and husband, whom Jamie remembered as tough and stubborn but loving and fair. Brian was deeply in love with his wife, Ellen MacKenzie Fraser, who preceded him in death.

Brian died shortly before Claire met Jamie after he believed his son to have been killed by Black Jack Randall and, therefore, suffered an attack. However, this character is introduced in Outlander through flashbacks and in season 7, when Roger goes back in time and meets Brian in person.

Ellen MacKenzie Fraser

Mother Of Jamie Fraser & Jenny Murray

Ellen MacKenzie Fraser, Brian Fraser’s wife and mother to Willie, Jenny, and Jamie, is a woman everyone remembers fondly in Outlander. Just about anyone who met her fell in love with her, including Murtagh Fitzgibbons, Brian’s second cousin. She was a gentle and kindly mother, known to be fiery and passionate (similar to her granddaughter Brianna).

Ellen grew up at Castle Leoch with her siblings, Colum, Dougal, Janet, Flora, and Jocasta, three of which have been featured in Outlander. Since Roger MacKenzie is a descendant of Ellen’s brother Dougal, this shared ancestor technically makes him and Brianna very distant cousins as well.

Jenny Fraser Murray

Daughter Of Brian & Ellen Fraser, Sister Of Jamie Fraser

Janet “Jenny” Fraser Murray is Brian and Ellen’s daughter and Jamie’s older sister. She possesses the Frasers’ characteristic strength and has been responsible for running the household and Leoch since her mother, Ellen, died.

Jenny married her brother Jamie’s best friend, Ian Murray, and together they had seven children: James, Margaret, Katherine, Caitlin, Michael, Janey, and Young Ian, the last of which has become a primary character in Outlander.

Ian Murray

Husband Of Jenny Murray

Ian Murray was Jenny Fraser’s husband and a childhood best friend to Jamie Fraser. While Jenny ran the show at Lallybroch, Ian served as a stand-in Laird while Jamie was imprisoned or else off on various adventures. Ian and Jamie fought together in the Battle of Daumier, where he was injured and had the lower part of his leg removed.

Ian remained a loving husband, father, and friend until his death in Outlander season 7. At some point before Claire and Jamie’s return to Scotland, he contracted consumption (tuberculosis), and the illness progressed to the point that there was nothing that could be done.

Young Ian Murray

Youngest Son Of Ian & Jenny Murray

Young Ian is the youngest child of Jenny and Ian Murray and the nephew to Jamie and Claire. He grew up at Lallybroch, but when he was still a teenager, Ian was kidnapped and taken to the Americas, where he was eventually saved by Jamie and Claire. It was many years before Ian returned to Scotland in Outlander season 7 since he built a life for himself in the colonies, both at Fraser’s Ridge and among the Mohawk.

Later, Ian learned that Emily had also given birth to his son, whom he named Ian James, though this boy was raised by a different father.

Ian married Emily, a Mohawk woman, and lived among her people for some years, assimilating into their culture. Together, they had a daughter, Iseabail, who was stillb

orn. Later, Ian learned that Emily had also given birth to his son, whom he named Ian James, though this boy was raised by a different father.

Jamie Fraser

Youngest Living Son Of Brian & Ellen Fraser

James “Jamie” Fraser is the third child of Brian and Ellen, husband to Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser, and father to Brianna and William. He’s the combination of both his parents’ personalities, and he loved both of them dearly. Jamie is passionate about protecting his family and is deeply loyal to his wife.

As the husband of a time traveler, Jamie has had an unconventional life. He and Claire had two children together, though one (Faith) was stillborn. Jamie also had a son out of wedlock, William Ransom, who Lord John Grey raised without revealing any knowledge of his true parentage.

Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser

Wife Of Jamie Fraser & Mother Of Brianna Randall Fraser MacKenzie

Claire Fraser is Jamie’s wife and Brianna’s mother. She was born in 1918 and came through the standing stones at Craigh Na Dun while she was married to Frank Randall in the 20th century following World War II. In the past, Claire married and fell in love with Jamie Fraser. They had two children together, though Faith Fraser was stillborn. Together, Claire and Jamie also adopted Fergus Fraser, a French orphan.

Claire’s parents, Henry and Julia Beauchamp, died in a car accident when their daughter was only five. She was then raised by her uncle, Quentin Lamber Beauchamp, an archeologist who would take Claire around the world during his studies. This is why Claire was so well prepared to travel through time and space.

Brianna Randall Fraser MacKenzie

Daughter Of Jamie & Claire Fraser

Brianna Randall Fraser MacKenzie was conceived in the 18th century but wasn’t born until 1948 after Claire traveled forward in time, believing Jamie would die at the Battle of Culloden. Brianna was then raised by Frank Randall, whom she believed to be her biological father until after the man’s death. Brianna eventually traveled back to the 18th century to meet and develop a close relationship with Jamie Fraser.

Brianna married fellow time traveler Roger MacKenzie, and they had two children together in the 18th century: Jeremiah and Amanda MacKenzie. Following little Mandy’s birth, Brianna and her family traveled back to the 20th century, where they purchased Castle Leoch, the Fraser ancestral home.

Roger MacKenzie

Husband Of Brianna Randall Fraser MacKenzie & Father Of Jeremiah & Amanda

Roger MacKenzie is the husband of Brianna Fraser and the father of Jeremiah and Amanda MacKenzie. He is a time traveler from the 20th century who was raised by his adoptive father, Reverend Reginald Wakefield, after both his parents, Jeremiah Walker MacKenzie and Marjorie Wakefield, were presumed dead following World War II.

Roger is a descendant of Geillis Dunkan and Dougal MacKenzie, the former of whom was a time traveler from the 20th century. This is why Roger is genetically capable of jumping through time, a trait that he and Brianna passed on to their two children.

Jeremiah Fraser MacKenzie

Son Of Roger & Brianna MacKenzie

Jeremiah Fraser MacKenzie is the son of Brianna and Roger and the grandson of Claire and Jamie. He was born in the 18th century and spent half of his childhood in the past and half in the 1970s. In Outlander season 7, Jemmy is abducted by Rob Cameron, who learns that the boy knows the secret location of the Jacobite gold, which Jamie had hidden away 200 years previously.

Amanda MacKenzie

Daughter Of Roger & Brianna MacKenzie

Amanda MacKenzie is the youngest child of Brianna and Roger and another grandchild of Claire and Jamie—though she has no memory of her 18th-century grandparents. Mandy was born with a heart condition common in newborn babies that could only be cured in the future. For this reason, Brianna and Roger took their infant daughter back to the 20th century, where she lived at her ancestral home at Castle Leoch in Scotland, hearing stories about her grandparents.

Fergus Fraser

Adoptive Son Of Jamie & Claire Fraser

Fergus Fraser, previously called Claudel, was born in Paris, France. He was raised in a brothel until Claire and Jamie took him in. He quickly became a member of their family and was later raised alongside Young Ian at Castle Leoch, fostered by Jenny and Ian Murray. Jamie eventually made Fergus’ status as a Fraser official when the boy married Marsali MacKimmie.

Fergus met and fell in love with Marsali MacKimmie, Jamie’s stepdaughter, in Scotland, and they settled together in the American colonies, where Fergus worked as a printer. Together, they had several children, most of which were delivered by Fergus’ adoptive mother, Claire.

Marsali MacKimmie Fraser

Wife Of Fergus Fraser & Stepdaughter Of Jamie Fraser

Marsali MacKimmie was an unofficial Fraser even before she married Fergus since her mother, Laoghaire, was temporarily married to Jamie Fraser. Marsali’s biological father, Simon MacKimmie, was killed at the Battle of Culloden, and Jamie stepped in to marry her mother, desiring to raise Laoghaire’s daughters. However, Jamie and Laoghaire’s marriage was annulled when it was revealed that Claire was still alive.

Though Marsali initially followed in her mother’s footsteps and despised Claire, they eventually developed a mother-daughter relationship with one another. In Outlander season 7, Marsali remains in the American colonies with her six children.

William Ransom

Illegitimate Song Of Jamie Fraser & Brother Of Brianna Randall Fraser MacKenzie

Growing up, William Ransom had no idea that he was a Fraser and instead believed that he was the legitimate son of Ludovic Ransom, Earl of Ellsmere. In truth, William was fathered by Jamie when he was forced to sleep with Geneva Dunsany, Ludovic’s wife. Following his legal parents’ deaths, William was raised by his uncle, Lord John Grey.

Following his legal parents’ deaths, William was raised by his uncle, Lord John Grey.

As a young man, William is serving among the loyalist army in the American colonies and still has no idea at the start of Outlander season 7, part 2, that he is Jamie’s son. Such news has been kept secret so that William’s position as the Earl of Ellsmere wouldn’t be challenged, but it’s only a matter of time before the lie falls apart. William is bound to discover that he is a Fraser through and through.
