Having worked on so many respected projects and playing so many challenging roles that have put her in several complex positions, one would expect nothing to phase her. This, however, is not always the case, as the actress revealed during an interview. Blunt confessed that while working with Tom Cruise in their 2014 film, Edge of Tomorrow, she burst into tears after getting into her costume for her character.
Emily Blunt’s Costume Was Not Comfortable At All
Rita Vrataski, who was portrayed by Emily Blunt, was a soldier who was well-liked and decorated for her role in the conflict between humanity and an advanced group of extraterrestrial invaders. The actress had to don a particular set of armor for the part in order for it to protect her character during combat. One can tell just by glancing at the outfit in the movie that it must have been difficult for her to walk or even fight while wearing it.
“Mine weighed about 85 pounds. The first time I put it on, it was a very interesting day”
During an interview on The Graham Norton Show, via Demetris, the actress was asked what it was like for her to wear this costume and how heavy it was. The actress revealed the weight of the armor, mentioning that it was over eighty pounds.
She then added that it was extremely challenging for her to do stunts in this, simply because of how heavy it was. Giving the interview alongside her co-star in this film, Tom Cruise, Blunt revealed the story of what it was like for her to wear the suit for the first time, and it was not pretty.
Emily Blunt Tried To Hide Her Discomfort
On The Graham Norton Show, Emily Blunt disclosed that Tom Crusie was with her the first time she wore the armor. The Academy Award-winning actor inquired about the actress’s comfort in the outfit because he cared about her wellbeing. At first, Blunt assured him that she was alright. Cruise re-asked her, just to be sure everything was well. She gave a different response this time.
“He (Tom) knew that I would be overwhelmed. He came over after I put the suit on and I was trying to hold it together and I’m not really, like a crier but he came up and he was like, ‘How are you doing? Are you okay?’ and I went, ‘Yeah, yeah, good,’ and he went, ‘Are you sure? Cause it’s hard right? It’s like heavy,’ and I went, ‘Yeah, it’s just like, it’s really heavy. It’s like a lot heavier than I thought it was gonna be,’. He told me to stop being a wuss.” She went on, “If he hugs me right now, it’s over”
The actress revealed that in between her trying to convince him that she was fine, she started to get emotional. Almost about to cry, Blunt told Cruise that she just did not expect being in this suit to be this challenging for her. Confused by her sudden emotional burst, the actor asked her to pull herself together.
