Get ready, NCIS fans: Tony DiNozzo is officially back… and he’s here to stay in a way we didn’t see coming.
After Michael Weatherly surprised fans by reprising his role for a season 21 guest appearance in February 2024, news broke he’s returning for a spinoff series on Paramount+. According to an announcement from Deadline, Michael and his former co-star Cote de Pablo (who portrayed DiNozzo’s romantic partner Ziva David) will reunite on screen for the first time in a decade, with the two starring in and leading as executive producers for the upcoming show. What’s more, the streamer has already given the green light for the series, with a 10-episode order expected to start production sometime this year.
Michael confirmed the news by sharing the story on X (formerly known as Twitter). “So … that happened …” he captioned the post on February 28.
Upon seeing the news, longtime viewers couldn’t help but voice their excitement in the comments. “Beyond excited!! This is going to be awesome in all the ways! Thank you!!” one person exclaimed on X. “Finally, they give us [hardcore] fans what we really wanted. Tony and Ziva are back. Hell yes!! 👍,” another agreed. “OMG!!! So psyched for this!!! 🙌❤️,” a different follower added.
Now that we know that Michael and Cote are reprising their roles in the most epic way possible, it’s time to break down all the details of what’s to come.
What is the new NCIS spinoff called?
In a surprise announcement from Michael and Cote on May 7, fans learned the name of the duo’s upcoming spinoff. Posting a joint clip with Paramount+ on Instagram, the duo revealed their new series will be called NCIS: Tony and Ziva.
“This isn’t a drill! 🚨,” read the official caption. “NCIS: Tony & Ziva, starring Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, is coming to #ParamountPlus! 💙.”
What is NCIS: Tony and Ziva about?
As for what to expect from this spinoff, an official press release from February 2024 revealed the show will follow Tony and Ziva as they raise their daughter in Paris. But as Tony’s security company is under surprise attack, “they must go on the run across Europe, try to figure out who is after them and maybe even learn to trust each other again so that they can finally have their unconventional happily ever after.”
It’s also important to note this isn’t the only NCIS series based on an O.G. character in the works. Back in January, CBS announced the order of NCIS: Origins, which will air during the 2024-2025 TV season and will follow the life of Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) in his first years as a special agent.
